Don Turrell, president and CEO of PTI, said: We think we have a real gem. It would be hard to find an acquisition where management didn't talk about synergies. The most obvious one here is product fit: there isn't any overlap.

Earlier this year, other players made similar moves to carve out a share in the discrete market, including Creative (3D-Labs), Matrox, SiS, and Via. The hands- down leaders in discrete graphics, however, remain ATI and Nvidia, which represent more than 90% of the market.

Available initially are five 78K0/KX1 and three V850ES/KX1 parts in ROM and flash versions, with additional configurations planned for 2002 and 2003. Pricing starts at $2 for the 8-bit series and $5 for the 32-bit series.

Chugg says that although COTS parts may pass radiation tests performed at ground-level, these may not sufficiently reflect the conditions they will encounter at the highest cruising altitudes used by civil aircraft. Radiation can then be hundreds of times more intense.

The company will be capitalized with $3.7 million. Tokyo Electron and Ebara will each own a 40 percent share and Dai Nippon Screen will have the rest. The alliance will give three shareholders a chance to enter the lithography market, while Toshiba can reap the results without a further investment.

But before HP could put those quantities in writing and assume the risk of owning the parts, the company had to understand its own forecasting errors, improve the way it measured forecast accuracy, and calculate the risk of price uncertainty, according to Venu Nagali, a manager at the Procurement Risk Management Group.

Jonathan Oomrigar, vice president of Oracle's High Technology Industries group, contends that the benefit of his company's end-to-end approach is the efficiency of an integrated solution and the ease of dealing with just one vendor. Still, Oomrigar concedes that there is a trade-off to such an approach.
